10 tips for success from female business owners

Alayna Frankenberry featured 10 tips for success from female business owners on today's PR Daily.

I practice tip number two frequently!  I know my clients and PR firms who hire me for contract work know how grateful I am for their business/support!

2. Be grateful.

Sharon Armstrong is an author who owns her own consulting business.

“I’ve had my own business since 2000,” she says. “My best tip for success is to remember to thank those who help you grow your business. Never forget! And thank folks in a personal way, if possible.”

Wonderful Summer Vacation Meeting My Colorado Clients

Yikes! I haven't posted since June!

In July I got to meet my two wonderful Colorado clients. I've been their publicist for more than two years and it was wonderful to put a name to a face.

In Pueblo, I met Dr. Rina Shinn, Cosmetic Surgeon. I toured her facility and met her staff. About a week later when we went back through Pueblo, she had us over for dinner. She made the most wonderful German macaroni and cheese; the noodles were home-made!

In Colorado Springs, I joined the staff lunch in the office of Dr. Ken Gasper. There was lots of laughter amongst his employees and the staff genuinely seems to really enjoy working together.

I felt so energized and uplifted after meeting these wonderful clients. I'm so blessed to be able to work for such highly respected medical professionals.

My New Client

I am thrilled to announce that LBPR has been retained by Dr. Shinn of Adonis Aesthetics for PR services. I'll be helping her with media relations, her monthly newsletter, web copy and social media.

I work out of Dallas. Dr. Shinn is in Pueblo, CO. It's great to be able to work from home for clients in various parts of the country!

Always Take the Meeting

One of the rules by Peter Shankman in his book, “Can We Do That? Outrageous PR Stunts That Work and Why Your Company Needs Them” hit home with me.

“Always take the meeting. You never know where the next client, next big project, next crazy idea, next new job, next promotion, raise or shot at glory is going to come from. Always take the meeting.”

I am currently the publicist for Marni Matyus who owns The Sling Station, Peppermint.com and Peppermint Baby Boutique.

About a year ago, she put out a notice on the DFW Babywearing Yahoo group that she needed models (moms and babies) for a photo shoot for her advertising. I agreed to help out.

But the day of the event, I debated on going. My daughter was about 5 months old at the time and a mama’s girl. I knew she wasn’t going to let Marni hold her to take babywearing photos. My husband encouraged me to go since I gave my word.

True to my gut feeling, my daughter screamed her head off whenever we placed her in a baby sling Marni was wearing.

Afterwards, when I was nursing my daughter to calm her down, I got to talking to Marni about her business. I really enjoyed wearing my daughter in a sling and so her business was very intriguing. I asked her about her PR/marketing efforts. She wasn’t doing much in terms of PR and was very interested that I was a PR freelancer. We exchanged cards. Had a lunch a few days later and now Marni is one of my most favorite clients!

Always take the meeting – or in my case, attend the photo shoot!

Green Media Tour

In celebration of Earth Day, I wrote a "Green Babies" pitch letter for my client who sells organic, natural and eco-friendly baby products.

Well, my client will be interviewed twice tomorrow (Earth Day!) by two different media outlets. I don't know if I've ever had a client on the media twice in one day. Talk about a media rush!

Marni Matyus
Peppermint Baby Boutique

Tuesday, April 22
6:30 a.m.
Mix 102.9
Marni will be featured in the celebrity segment. The hostess, Victoria Snee will talk about the baby boom in Hollywood and and how celebrities love organic baby products. My client will bring a variety of organic baby products to talk about on air.

Later that morning at 9 a.m.
Good Morning Texas, channel 8
Marni will be interviewed by Paige McCoy Smith of the "Not So Perfect Parent" segment. Marni will be interviewed about the increase in organic baby products available to parents, the benefits of raising a green baby and she will once again be able to talk about a variety of products she sells in her store to keep babies healthy, safe and eco-friendly.

Client Gifts

I always send my clients a personal Thanksgiving card because I am extremely grateful for their business and trust in me.

This year I also sent Mother's Day cards because I'm grateful for the opportunity to work at home and be with my daughter. I work when she sleeps and am right there when she wakes up!

For Christmas gifts, here's what I sent:

Two clients who own their own PR firms received the book, "The New Rules of Marketing and PR: How to Use News Releases, Blogs, Podcasting, Viral Marketing and Online Media to Reach Buyers Directly" by David Meerman Scott. It's so wonderful to be able to market directly to your customers instead of relying solely on publicity and advertising! I loved this book and it was the inspiration for this blog!

Another client, who already gets the power of blogs and podcasting, will receive the "Women's Advantage 2008 Page-a-Day" calendar. It's full of innovative ideas on strategy, teambuilding, marketing, finance, and more. Every day she'll learn a valuable lesson from a mentor who is successfully growing her business.

What are you giving clients this year for the holidays?

Merry Christmas everyone!
